Vampy Lips

Nothing screams “bad ass” like a vampy lip!  In order to achieve this look, there are a number of important steps you will want to take.  So join me in deconstructing this look.

  1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!  Your lips are the main focus and should receive all the love and attention.  Fresh sugar lip polish ($24) is my go-to exfoliator treatment, but you could use a handy clean toothbrush to gently scrub any flakey skin.
  2. If you have some peach fuzz on your upper lip, you’re going to want to remove it.  Since vampy lips accentuate that area of your face, you want a very clean canvas.  The Sally Hansen Creme Hair Remover Duo Kit ($5.99) has been a favorite of mine for years.  I’v never experienced any discoloration or skin irritation with this particular product.  However, if it is your first time using a kit like this one, make sure to test on a small area of your face first.
  3. Keep your face makeup light and even.  Use your favorite foundation followed by concealer (like the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer) on any areas that are red.  I make sure to apply concealer around my nose and lips, again to negate any redness or uneven tone.
  4. Lip liner is required.  Lining your lips will guarantee that your lipstick will not bleed or featherout onto the fine lines around your lips.  Once again, you can use concealer around the lips for a truly streamlined look.
  5. Pick your favorite shade and apply.  Choose a color you feel most comfortable with and rock it with confidence!  For this particular look, I used MAC lip pencil ($16.50) in Vino and Anastasia Beverly Hills Lustrous Lip Gloss ($40 for set of eight lip glosses) in the shade Black Cherry.

Lip Therapy

Somedays I wake up without the motivation to wear at least a drop of makeup. No foundation, no lipstick, not even mascara can coerce me – and that’s saying a lot! There are moments, although rare, when I want a bare face—well almost a bare face. Because while on any given day I can forgo all and any makeup, my lips simply cannot do without a good lip balm and neither should yours.

In the everyday rush to put on our “face” we sometimes forget the basics. We become oblivious to the needs our lips have, such protecting them from the suns harmful rays or the need to keep them moisturized. So go ahead and dig out your most treasured lip balm and give it some love. Your lips will thank you.

P.S. And yes, you definitely want to pair your lip balm with a good SPF moisturizer in order to round out your bare faced look.

Matte lips have been trending hard for the past few months.  Almost all major brands have come out with a variation of this look, especially in the form of liquid lipstick.  One major advantage to rocking a matte liquid lip is the staying power.  I can wear my favorite shade, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in “Baci” ($24), for at least five hours without retouching!  The color stays rich and vibrant with only one application.  However, buyer beware.  Your lips may feel like the Sahara desert by the end of the day.  Furthermore, you may find removal a task in futility.  So while I covet a great liquid lipstick, be sure to follow these tips before you take the plunge.

Before Application

  1.  Exfoliate your lips for a more even application.  I love using Fresh Sugar Lip Polish ($24).
  2. When possible, apply lip balm an hour before applying the liquid lipstick.  This ensures some lip moisture and will provide an ideal lip canvas.
  3. Apply your favorite shade of liquid lipstick!  Note:  Lip liner is optional, however I find it beneficial to use it when wearing darker or more vibrant shades.

Removal

Option #1 – Vaseline

Just add some Vaseline to a dry paper towel and gently wipe away lip color.  You may need to repeat this process depending on the color lipstick you are removing.

Option #2 – Sephora Collection Ultimate Oil-in-Gel Lipstick Remover
